Bydgoski Ruch Miejski (Bydgoszcz Urban Movement) is a non-government organization established in January 2017 in the city of Bydgoszcz, Poland. It originally operated under the name Społeczny Rzecznik Pieszych (”The Voice of Pedestrians” Association), which was changed in 2022. It is a non-profit  organization that relies on the voluntary work of its members and supporters.

The Association was the first of its type in Poland to join the International Federation of Pedestrians (IFP). The IFP is a network of non-profit associations and individuals from all over the world, working for pedestrians and liveable public space. The IFP was founded as an UN-accredited NGO in 1963 and has been promoting the rights of pedestrians ever since.

Also we are a founding member of the Federation Piesza Polska (Pedestrian Poland), which unites pedestrian organizations from towns and cities around Poland. Members of Piesza Polska organized the first assembly of pedestrians called ”Pedestrian Critical Mass” in Warsaw in September 2017.

Our Vision

Every means of travel, whether by car, by bicycle, or on a tram, begins with a walk. Unfortunately, planning and designing the infrastructure is usually done with the comfort of drivers in mind and pedestrians rarely protest, which does not help their situation. At the moment, pedestrian routes built in Bydgoszcz are full of illogical and inconvenient solutions. There is an inconsistent vision that fails to asses the solutions from a user’s perspective.

The objective of our activity is to engage the residents of the city and encourage them to become more active in co-creating the future infrastructure, to make the city authorities aware of the significance of the problems, and effectively get them to reverse the above trend. It was possible to successfully introduce the ”Catalogue of good practices of designing pedestrian spaces”, which will serve as a guide for the city’s authorities on how to design the public space wisely. The city authorities need to be aware that accessibility and the condition of pedestrian infrastructure influence the residents’ quality of life and the city’s reception by its visitors.

Main Aims

The highest quality of public and green spaces. Promoting walking and cycling as means of transport in the city. Teaching the authorities and citizens that road safety depends mainly on road infrastructure.

Our Mission and Vision

”Vision Zero” Policy in Bydgoszcz in 2030 – zero deaths as the result of a road traffic accidents by 2030.
